THE HEART OF RUSSIAN SCIENCE

The Novosibirsk Region is one of the centers of Russian science. It has been holding leadership in scientific and technology development for 50 years. 48 institutes of Academies of Sciences, 7 Russia’s largest clinics, 60 research, engineering and design institutes work here. Novosibirsk scientific schools established good reputation around the world and the centers preparing engineers are recognized throughout the country.

Academgorodok is the heart of science in the Novosibirsk Region. It is one of the main scientific and educational centers in Russia. Academgorodok was founded in 1957 by academician Mikhail Lavrentyev. Dozens of research institutes, Presidium of SB RAS, Novosibirsk State University and School of Physics and Mathematics are situated in Academgorodok. One of the best research institutes in Academgorodok is Institute of Nuclear Physics, whose achievements are well known in Russia and abroad. For instance, 80% of Russia’s contribution in the development and launch of the Large Hadron Collider is the result of work of the scientists from the Institute of Nuclear Physics.

Novosibirsk State University prepares specialists for scientific institutions of the Novosibirsk Region and other regions of Russia. In 2009 NSU received the status of national research university. The Novosibirsk Region has its own scientific town (naukograd) Koltsovo. In 1979 it was founded as a separate working settlement named after renowned Russian biologist, cytologist and geneticist Nikolai Koltsov. It is not surprising that the town-forming organization of Koltsovo is the State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology “Vector”. The specialists of the center study variola virus, Ebola virus and other dangerous viruses, here they develop methods of tick-borne encephalitis prevention, study the viruses of bird and swine influenza. In the world there are only two laboratories which have collections of natural smallpox and other orthopoxviruses – one of them is in the center “Vector”.

On the basis of the scientific town of Koltsovo, which is in the Novosibirsk Region, there was created Business Incubator for innovative companies. Preferential lease terms, all the necessary infrastructure and possibility of future production enable its residents to get maximum profit within the shortest time. For the implementation of scientific projects of SB RAS and innovative companies the project of the Technology Park is being realized in Academgorodok. Working with the accumulated base of fundamental research and material and technical resources of Academgorodok resident-companies will be able to develop their projects and create pilot productions in high technology spheres. Science development in the Novosibirsk Region creates favourable conditions for the companies working in the spheres of information technology and communication. World known “Parallels”, “Alawar Entertainment”, “Novosoft”, “SoftLab” and “Center of Financial Technologies”, which is the developer of Russian payment system “Zolotaya Korona” (“Golden Crown”), are among such companies.Moreover, the branches and representative offices of the world largest IT corporations and manufacturers (“Sun Microsystems”, “SAP”, “Hewlett-Packard”, “Intel” and “Cisco Systems”) work in the Novosibirsk Region.
